Amazon’s Future Profits Will Be Generated By Kindle Books – Not Kindle Readers

Hamish Hayward | July 22, 2010

Since its launch in November 2007, the Kindle electronic book reader has been a great product for Amazon. Amazon’s strong association with both books and electronics was a marriage made in heaven and the Kindle, after an upgrade to Kindle 2.0 in February of 2009 followed by the introduction of the large display Kindle DX model in the summer of the same year, went on to become Amazon’s top selling product.

Over the festive period of 2009, the Kindle became Amazon’s most gifted product ever. On Christmas day of 2009, Amazon sold more Kindle books than physical volumes for the first time ever. Admittedly this was probably due to people who had received a Kindle as a Christmas gift testing it out by downloading a Kindle book or two – but it was a landmark event for Amazon and the Kindle nonetheless.

However, there were times when it seemed as if Amazon was a somewhat reluctant manufacturer. They went out of their way to make sure that Kindle books could be read – even without a Kindle reader. Currently, Amazon has released Kindle “Apps” for a huge number of alternative devices. These include the PC, the Mac, the iPod Touch, the iPhone, the new iPad, the Blackberry and any device which runs Android. On the face of it, Amazon seemed to be their own main competition.

However, the method in Amazon’s madness became clear after the release of the Apple iPad. This saw the price of e-book readers fall as many consumers rushed to buy Apple’s new device which, amongst its many functions, was suitable for use as an e-book reader. However, at the same time as e-book reader prices were falling, the average price of the e-books to read on them was creeping ever upwards.

Prior to the release of the iPad, Apple had negotiated a deal with the major publishing houses which allowed them to set the price of the e-book editions of their publications at pretty much whatever level they liked. The only rider was that the same e-book could not be offered at a lower price for any other reader – Amazon’s Kindle for example. Up until that point it had been Amazon’s policy to price e-books at $9.99 or less. Apple’s deal, much to the delight of the publishers, pretty much blew that out of the water. At first glance, Amazon looked to have been hit pretty hard by the release of the iPad.

However, a more detailed analysis of the situation shows that Amazon’s decision to release Kindle apps for just about every major device going was a stroke of genius on their part. Each App acts as an additional outlet for the sale of Kindle books – and given that e-book prices are rising, Amazon can afford to sell their Kindle hardware at a lower price secure in the knowledge that they will make a profit by selling Kindle books over the lifetime of the reader. If the iPad were to totally decimate the Kindle sales figures – an improbable scenario – Kindle books would continue to sell. No doubt, if another tablet computer or super duper reader launched tomorrow there would be “an App for that” within a couple of weeks. Amazon seem to know what they’re doing after all.

Why A Good Ironing Board Is Essential

Hamish Hayward |

Whilst it may be a mundane piece of equipment, and one to which most people would give very little thought, a good ironing board is an essential item for any household. Choose the wrong one and you could wind up with poorly ironed clothes, spend more time than you need to ironing and even give yourself a bad back.

Nowadays, the majority of people use steam irons – or even steam generator irons which are growing in popularity due to the fact that they can reduce the amount of time required for ironing. For both of these types of irons an ironing board which has a surface of open mesh construction is desirable. The mesh structure allows the steam to pass through the board, which helps to avoid condensation and soggy garments and ironing board covers when ironing large amounts of items.

The ironing board cover should be as smooth as possible to make ironing easier. It should be well secured and have no tendency to slip. An elasticated cover which incorporates one or two cross ties will usually suffice and will not slide around on you when you’re doing your ironing. A nice shiny metalised cover will also reflect heat from the iron back into the garment and will help to remove creases from the underside of the material whilst the top surface is being pressed.

The type of items that you intend to iron will play an important role in determining the size and shape of the board for you. A small board will be easier to store – but will typically require you to position the garment that you’re pressing more often. Picking a large board is usually the best choice – but make sure it has a good taper on the pointed end. This will make it easier to get into corners – the corners of blouses and shirts, collars etc.

Scissor action legs which allow you to adjust the height of the board are pretty much standard these days. Make sure that you set the board height at a level that’s comfortable for you and doesn’t strain your back. If you’re the only one who irons (I bet you are) then a position marker is always useful. If you like to sit down whilst ironing then choose a board which has curved legs so that your knees don’t bang against the legs when you’re sitting down. Whatever type of legs you go for, they should provide good support and give you a stable platform to iron upon. A broad T-piece foot or splayed feet joined by a connecting bar usually works well.

The support for the iron itself should be sturdy enough to take the weight of the iron. Wire type extension platforms are usually okay for standard steam irons. The extra weight presented by a steam generator iron may mean that a longer board which just features a heat resistant plate on a slightly extended surface is better. Alternatively, the base unit of steam generator irons may be positioned on the floor – as long as the connecting hose between base unit and iron is long enough to permit this.

A Tefal steam generator iron – will cut your ironing time in half. You’ll wonder how you ever got by without one.

Kindle Reader Further Price Cuts

Hamish Hayward |

The Amazon Kindle reader seemed to be the ideal product for Amazon. It totally dominated the e-book reader market, commanding about 60% of all e-book reader sales, and it was hard to see where the competition was coming from. There were many predictions of a “Kindle killer”, but despite the release of new readers by the likes of Sony, Barnes and Noble, Plastic Logic and Bookeen, the Kindle looked set to hold on to its number one position.

However, Apple seemed intent upon spoiling the party when they released their long awaited iPad which, although an entirely different type of device, has the ability to read e-books. Most Apple devices seem to engender a love/hate reaction amongst consumers and there was no shortage of pundits and analysts ready to point out the shortcomings of Apple’s new device. However, the number of people who would buy practically any new gadget which has the apple logo on it is very definitely high enough to make a difference to the sales of Amazon’s Kindle reader.

As well as releasing new, sexy hardware, Apple also struck a deal with many of the major publishers which let them charge whatever they wanted for e-books – as long as they weren’t offered for less on any other device – the Kindle in other words. This looked set to put a bit of a spanner in the works of Amazon’s policy of providing e-books for $ 9.99 or less. It certainly seems as if the price of e-books has been creeping upwards since the launch of the iPad. It does seem a little strange that increased competition should drive prices upwards – but there you have it.

It’s a different story with the actual e-book reader hardware however. Barnes and Noble have dropped the price of their Nook reader from $ 259 to $ 199. Amazon have now dropped the price of the Kindle 2.0 from $259 to $189 – a very low number considering that it retailed at $ 359 when it was launched in February of 2009. The price of the larger format Kindle DX has also been reduced from $ 489 to $ 379, an event which coincides with the device’s first upgrade which includes a higher contrast screen and a new body color.

So the top of the range, and freshly updated, DX reader is now over $ 100 cheaper than the entry level Apple iPad – and unlike the iPad it requires no monthly internet connection fee. The iPad is, of course, considerably more than an e-book reader – and many customers will be quite happy to pay more for a more powerful device which can be used for a variety of different applications – even if it does have a considerably shorter battery life.

This downward price trend for e-book readers could be no more than a reaction to the appearance of the iPad on the scene. On the other hand, it could signal a new approach by the likes of Barnes and Noble and Amazon. Given their business structures, it would be quite possible for these companies to take advantage of a higher average e-book price by selling the hardware for less and then making more money on the actual e-book sales over the lifetime of the reader.

Can A Hard Water Supply Damage Your Household Appliances?

Hamish Hayward | July 21, 2010

The domestic water supply to the majority of homes is “hard water”. Hard water is simply a definition used to describe water which has a fairly high concentration of minerals dissolved in it. Calcium and magnesium are the two most important minerals. There is, according to the World Health Organisation, absolutely no health risk associated with hard water. However, it can have an effect on the operating efficiency and useful lifetime of a number of different household appliances.

Hard water supply can lead to a build up of mineral deposits, sometimes known as “scale”, in heating systems, water pipes and a variety of small household appliances. Household equipment which uses hot or boiling water, steam irons, kettles, washing machines, coffee makers, dishwashers, etc. – are especially prone to this. This is a result of the fact that heating hard water releases many of the minerals which then reform as scale. Central heating systems and hot water boilers may also be affected.

There are a number of different variables which influence how much scale is generated. The temperature of the water is one of the strongest influencing factors on this process. More scale is produced at higher temperatures. Running dishwashers and washing machines at a lower temperature setting will reduce the amount of scale produced and help to ensure that these appliances continue to operate efficiently and have an extended working life. Using soaps and detergents which have an anti-scaling agent included will also help.

With appliances such as kettles, coffee makers and steam irons, it’s not really practical to operate at lower temperatures. However, some kettles include filters – which can help to prevent various minerals getting into the sensitive heater elements. Many modern irons now come complete with removable anti-scale traps which gather the scale deposits for easy cleaning just by flushing it under running water. It’s also possible to get a variety of anti-scale chemicals and cleaners which can be used to clean your appliances periodically.

Although there are no health problems associated with a hard water supply, many people will dislike the resulting taste of hot drinks or boiled and steamed food. On the other hand, some people actually prefer the taste of tea that is made using hard water to that made using soft water – it is, in the truest sense of the word, a matter of taste. If you don’t like the taste of your hot drinks and food, then you can make use of a water filter. A simple, but effective, jug filter will work – or you could install an under sink or whole house filter if you prefer.

It may seem like an inconvenience, but it’s well worth the effort to counter the effects of a hard water supply. In addition to the improved operational efficiency of your domestic appliances, use of the correct detergents and the selection of a lower operating temperature, combined with scale removal from time to time, will save you money by extending the life of your appliances.

Cut out the boredom of long ironing sessions with a Tefal steam generator iron – you’ll be amazed at how much time you can save.

Are E-Book Sales More Important To Amazon Than Kindle Sales?

Hamish Hayward | July 16, 2010

Amazon, using their Kindle reader family as a vehicle, has been a major player in the development of both the e-book reader and e-book market. The first Kindle was released in November of 2007. In February of 2009, the updated and enhanced Kindle 2.0 hit the market, quickly followed by the large format Kindle DX in the summer of the same year.

The Kindle readers dominated the market with a 60% share of all American e-book reader sales. Sony’s PRS reader – which was actually available in 2006, some time before the Kindle – followed in second place with a 35% market share. Other companies quickly saw the huge potential of the rapidly developing e-book reader market and either launched or updated their own readers in order to get a share of the available sales.

Manufacturers like Bookeen, Plastic Logic, Sony and Barnes and Noble worked hard to get their share of the rapidly developing market, but the dominance of the Kindle seemed pretty well established, if not unassailable. It was only when Apple launched their iPad that the Kindle faced any credible competition – despite the fact that the two devices were very different and, you would think, aimed at different target markets.

Since the launch of the iPad, e-book reader prices have fallen quite some way. The Kindle 2.0 is currently selling for just $ 189, a huge reduction over the $ 359 launch price of February 2009. The large format Kindle DX has been upgraded, being fitted with a new improved screen, and has had a price reduction from $ 489 to just $ 379. Barnes and Noble have also dropped the price of their Nook reader from $ 259 to $ 199.

Whilst the price of e-book readers may be falling, the same cannot be said about the price of the e-books which these devices are used to read. Again, Apple had a hand in this. Apple had, in advance of the launch of the iPad, set up their own book store and negotiated a pricing deal with the major publishing houses which basically allowed them to fix the price of their e-book editions at whatever level they wished. The only rider being that they could not offer the same e-book version at a lower price on any other platform. This effectively put paid to Amazon’s policy of pricing e-books at $ 9.99 or lower and was very popular amongst the publishing companies.

Amazon may have had to abandon their low e-book price policy – but that wasn’t necessarily a disaster for them. Considering the way that Amazon have made it possible to read Kindle books on such a wide variety of different devices – you can use the PC, the Mac, the iPod Touch, the iPhone, the iPad, your Blackberry and any device which runs Android to read Kindle books right now (and no doubt there will be further additions in future) – it must be obvious that Amazon are more interested in book sales than hardware sales. The latest downward price movement for e-book readers and simultaneous price increase for e-books means that they can now sell the hardware for less and make their profit by selling e-books over the life of the hardware. The same will apply for Barnes and Noble and Apple themselves of course.

This trend may tend to favor companies which have a foot in both the book and hardware sales camps. Considering the current number of devices which can be used to read Kindle books, it looks as if Amazon will be a major player in the future of digital publishing for some time to come.

Spend Less Time Ironing Thanks To A Steam Generator Iron

Hamish Hayward | July 2, 2010

Ironing is, quite frankly, a thankless and seemingly never ending task. You can lessen the boredom somewhat by watching TV or listening to music while you do it – but it’s still a tedious chore which very few people enjoy. Anything which could reduce the amount of time required for ironing would be very welcome in most households.

Of course, you could send your clothes to the dry cleaners – or even employ a maid. There are even professional ironers who will pick up your freshly washed clothes and return them crisply pressed should you wish. However, these are all rather expensive options.

A more viable alternative (for most people at least) would be to take advantage of advances in iron design and use a steam generator iron. Whilst these may look very similar to conventional irons, they have a completely different construction – and this provides a number of positive benefits.

Unlike a conventional steam iron, a steam generator iron has no water in the iron itself. Instead it uses a base unit which acts as both a water reservoir and heater. This produces a good deal more steam than a standard iron – and the steam is at a higher pressure.

The steam is fed to the iron using a hollow connecting hose and, because it is at high pressure, it penetrates deep into the fabric of the garment being pressed. This makes it easier – and faster – to iron. The fact that there is no water in the iron also means that it is lighter and easier to use. The net result is an improvement in the quality of the finished garment and a reduction in the amount of time spent ironing. Most users report a reduction in ironing time of around about 50%.

When deciding upon which steam generator iron to choose, be certain to pick one with a high steam pressure. Between 4.5 and 5.0 bar is ideal. Sometimes you will see the iron capacity stated in “grams of steam per minute” (gpm), in which case you would be well advised to pick one with a value between 70 and 120 gpm.

You should also ensure that the size of the water reservoir is sufficient – so that you don’t need to keep stopping ironing to top up the water. A removable water tank will make filling easier – and some irons have the facility to top up the reservoir whilst using the iron – which will avoid having to wait whilst the iron heats up again.

Other factors that should be taken into consideration include the material of the soleplate, the ease of use, the inclusion of some type of anti-scale system and the length of the connecting hose between the iron and the base unit.

It’s true that steam generator irons tend to cost a little bit more than conventional steam irons. However, bearing in mind the fact that they can halve the amount of time that you need to spend ironing – as well as giving you better finished garments – you may well think that they are excellent value for money.

Ironing is a thankless task at best. Cut it down to size with a Tefal steam generator iron – you’ll be pleasantly surprised at just how much time you are able to save.
