Golfing For Novices: Part One

Rhys Jones | August 2, 2010

The sport of golf has really boomed in public awareness over the last 45 years. It has produced fantastic world-champions such as Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman and Tiger Woods and world-renowned courses like St. Andrews, Sunningdale, Pinehurst ans Augusta.

Why has golf become so popular these days? Its the opportunity to be outside, to get a good whole body workout, network with friends or business colleagues at a leisurely pace, and to play a game that you can never play perfectly.

Your scorecard shows your progress, or lack of it, and this can spur you on to want to play again.

This is the first lesson for the novice golfer who doesn’t know anything about golfing.

Golf is played on an eighteen-hole course. Each hole has its own “par” (value), which is the combined number of tee shots (drives), fairway shots, chips (short hits as you approach the green), and putts (on the green) you should need to take.

The par number is based on the length and difficulty of the hole. Pars range from 3 to 6. If you get the ball in the hole in five shots on a par five hole, you “made par.” If it took you six shots, its called a bogie, if you made it in four, its a birdie.

‘Hazards’ or obstructions are usually placed before all the holes. Ponds, sand bunkers and trees are positioned in such a way as to make it more difficult to reach the green. Novice golfers should try to find a course with fewer hazards, which is therefore easier to play.

Players mark their own scorecard with the cumalative total of shots taken for each hole. After playing all the holes, the players add up their own scorecards and the one with the lowest score is the winner.

It is vital that beginners to golfing should not take the game too seriously, because it takes a very long time to play golf proficiently, even if the professionals on TV make it look so easy.

Take a lesson or two at the start of your golfing ‘career’, because it will help you develop a proper swing and help you get off to a good start.

Moderate Retirement Gifts For Golfers

Rhys Jones | July 24, 2010

There is a commonly held belief that golf is the exclusive realm of rich entrepreneurs and businessmen. It is also still seen as an excluding sport that is not easily accessible to ordinary blue collared employees. However, this is not really true any more as modernization and commercialization have brought these so-called exclusive sports into the reach of everyone.

This is because there is no need to acquire expensive equipment to play a game, so, unlike big game fishing and polo which require very costly resources like a boat or a horse respectively, golfers just need a set of golf clubs, which are reasonably affordable. With this in mind, retirement gifts for golfers and aspiring golfers can be easily thought of.

Making personalized retirement gifts for golfers is quite an easy task as you can easily personalize your golfing equipment with things such as home made golf club pouches, and caddy covers and ball cleaners. These can be knitted or made using any handicraft requiring other materials.

Another idea is to think about the fashion aspect of golfing which is to focus on the things worn by a golfer. You may even start a new trend in golfing apparel just by having a good imagination and using a timely combination of clothing design for your retiree.

The most easiest method of getting a retirement gift for golfers is to go to the nearest sports shop and get your retiree something they sell there. It may sound a bit impersonal, but then this may prove really useful, if the retiree is still a novice golfer. Maybe, you could get a golfing book, a subscription to a golfing magazine or a box of personalized golf balls.

However, you could find out what your retiree golfer still needs, and perhaps also use your imagination to think about in what ways you can enhance the golfing equipment he may already have.

Commercially made golfing equipment is always a safe bet. If you want to make your retiree feel great, buy him or her a famous-name set of golf clubs, thereby making him feel like a pro.

You could go to a joke shop and ask if they have any joke items for the golfer there. They probably do, as golf is such a popular game.

The gag gifts should be chosen very carefully as it could be a sensitive matter for the retiree, especially those who are still novice players. Gags as gifts in relation to golfing might be taken the wrong way and hinder their progress if they are upset by the idea emphasized by the gag or joke given to them.

As for veteran players who are already well adapted to the game, the gift of a good gag on their retirement day would be quite funny since they would already see golfing not only as a way to relieve stress, but also to actually have some fun in a competitive environment.

Retirement gifts for golfers are just a simple way to make your golfer friend enjoy life after his career is over.

Fashion And Ladies Golf Attire

Rhys Jones | May 30, 2010

I was perusing one of those ‘Golfing for Women’ magazines the other day and began wondering where the women live, who wear the golf attire modeled in women’s golf magazines? I’ve never seen women, not even the professionals, who would wear such expensive and outrageous clothes.

It’s easy to spend money fitting yourself out for golf: hats, sunglasses, gloves, shirts, shorts, socks, windbreakers and shoes all add up quickly, even if you shop at the sales. Then add in equipment, bag and cart and you have to play quite often to keep the “CPU” – cost per use down to an acceptable level.

One full-page glossy advertisement showed a beautiful young ‘golfing lady’ in really tiny hot-pants (like that’s permitted on golfing greens!) that cost nearly $300, a golf shirt at almost $600, a jacket by Ralph Lauren at almost $200 and two-toned Utuser shoes costing $400 plus.

That totals just about $1,500! I know that it would be impossible for me to get the CPU on that outfit down to anywhere near a normal limit in my entire golfing life! Please don’t get me wrong – I do love clothes and I do really, really love shoes, but I could never afford, nor even want, golf shoes or pants that cost as much as most people’s weekly wages.

OK, you need comfortable golfing shoes that don’t look like a pair of clogs, but really, you can find cheaper and still a la mode golf shoes.

I have bought a couple of really trendy golfing outfits, even though none of them are famous brand names. If I were to add up the cost of all of those articles of clothing, it would not come to the cost of a Tse golf shirt. Personally, I would rather have several stylish outfits than one that is priced way over-the-top.

If I were to wear a $1,500 set of clothes to play golf in, I would just be too worried about getting it dirty or sweating in it to play a proper round of golf.

Golfing for Novices: Part Two

Rhys Jones | May 13, 2010

What Should You Keep in Your Golf Bag?

There is quite a selection of golf bags on the market: some are very pretty, designer bags, made for looking good; others are practical golf bags designed by golfers for golfers and some are half-way between the two types. Then there is ‘big’, ‘bigger’ and ‘ginormous’ – big enough to use as a suitcase.

As a rule of thumb, you only need a golf bag large enough to hold your clubs, spare balls, your glove, keys, tees, spare pencils, ball markers, a ball retriever, suntan lotion, a plastic mac, and an umbrella.

You could also include other items that are handy when outdoors, such as tissues, a small first-aid kit or at least some plasters and some anti-insect spray.

A small pack of baby wipes comes in very handy; in your bag they get warmed by the heat, so when you get sweaty or a sand trap covers you with sand, a nice warm wipe can be very refreshing.

Other things that could come in useful are certain drugs: for instance, antihistamine, if you are allergic to wasp stings or medication to counteract an illness like diabetes (if you suffer from it, that is). It is vital to remember to replace these medicines before their expiry date though.

You should also switch off your mobile phone before stowing it away in one of your golf bag’s side pockets to prevent it from upsetting other players. You have to be considerate to you fellow players and mobile phones on a golf course are considered a nuisance as they are in restaurants.

Knowing that you are prepared for most of the minor problems that can arise while you are out on the course will help you to enjoy your game. And the game is mostly about being relaxed. You are prepared for bee stings, ant bites, blisters and rain, so you can get on with your game safe in that knowledge!

Basic Golfing Tips for Beginners: 3

Owen Jones | April 24, 2010

The term ‘the long game’ is used to refer to the drives (shots off the tee) and fairway shots, which means every shot with the exception of the ones you make to actually get onto the green.

For the reason that each hole has a different difficulty level, a different par and different obstructions, saying that you should use your driver on every tee every time would be totally wrong.

This is something that you will learn over time as you learn the various shots you need to make according to the club, the placement of the ball and your personal swing.

Without putting too fine a point on it, the lower the number of the club, the longer and lower your ball will travel through the air. So, for example, a 4-iron will make the ball travel on a long and low trajectory and that will most make it roll when it hits the ground, whereas a 9-iron will impart much more loft to the ball and ensuring that it will go less distance both in the air and over the ground.

The professionals on TV make it look so easy, don’t they? They hit the ball long and straight time after time after time and never miss-hit the ball causing it trickle six or seven feet or completely miss the ball altogether.

A very important part of the game is driving and if you spend many hours at the driving range you will see a big improvement in your distance shots. You should keep using the same club in the experiment to see what works for you if you move the ball forward or backward in your stance. And take a lesson or two from a pro, if possible to learn the proper swing from the beginning.

You need to get to grips with ‘the long game’ as it will ensure that you get to the green in fewer strokes, which will keep your score level and frustration level down. Bear in mind that it takes a long time to learn to be consistent and also always remember: you’re supposed to be having a good time! So go and enjoy yourself.

About Nike Golf Shoes

Rhys Jones | April 15, 2010

Nike golf shoes are one of the things you can use to improve your game. If you have only played golf in casual footwear before, or if you’re looking for a way to improve your general game, investing in a good pair of golf shoes can make a large difference. Like in other sports, the shoes you wear can directly impact on your performance.

As you have to have a smooth swing and be able to follow through on your swing in golf, all without losing control of the strength of your swing, your golf shoes can help or hinder you. Nike golf shoes are designed to help you balance, gripping the turf as much as necessary yet letting you put full strength and control behind each swing.

As these golf shoes have special compartments in the heels, every step is easier and lighter to make. They put a spring in your step and yet offer the level of support your feet, legs and knees need in order to enjoy playing your game of golf very comfortably for longer periods of time.

Because golf usually involves a lot of walking, Nike golf shoes have been constructed as a blend of walking shoe and golf shoe. Each step you take cushions your legs and knees against impact, allowing you to concentrate your strength and effort on your game of golf, rather than how to make your way to the next hole or to wherever your ball has landed.

When you go to buy Nike golf shoes, there are several things that you ought to keep in mind. The first thing you need to consider is your level of skill. Golf, like many other sports, has gear that can be used by amateurs or advanced professionals alike, but it is better to differentiate.

In most cases, amateurs pick the Nike golf shoes suited for professionals, but rarely end up finding the full potential of the shoe, as they do not know how to get the most out of the shoes.

While professionals can get great use out of these Nike golf shoes, it is often better for amateurs to purchase an entry level golf shoe that will better suit their needs. The increase in power afforded to your stroke will usually be lost on those who are beginners, as they do not yet have the skill to control the stroke as they need to.

So, it is better to purchase the Nike golf shoes that match your level of skill, since these shoes will have the comfort and features you need. You can buy Nike golf shoes from a number of sources. For those who want cheaper shoes yet still require the quality of the professional shoes, you could purchase last year’s shoes from Nike outlet centers.

If you want only top of the line shoes, you can buy from online Nike stockists or through a number of online and local retail vendors (see below).

Modest Retirement Gifts For Golfers

Colin Jones | January 10, 2010

There is a commonly-held belief that golf is the pastime and sport of entrepreneurs and businessmen. It also has the reputation of being exclusive and elite and not being available to ordinary blue collared workers. However, this is not really true, since modern technology and globalization have brought this so-called elite sport into the realm of normal people.

This is because you don’t need to buy sophisticated equipment to play. Unlike big game fishing or polo which need a lot of resources – a boat or a horse respectively – golfers just need a set of golf clubs, which are reasonably affordable these days. Bearing this in mind, retirement gifts for golfers and aspiring golfers are more easily thought of.

Personally made retirement gifts to personalize golfing equipment is very easy as you could easily make it personal by embroidering such items as golf club pouches or caddy covers. These can be knitted, if you are a knitter or by any similar craft which may require other materials.

A good idea is to think about the fashions of golfing which means to focus on the things worn by golfers. You may even be able to set a new trend in golfing apparel by using your lively imagination and an interesting design for your retiree.

Normal gifts. The most common and usual method of getting a retirement gift for golfers is to go over to the nearest sports shop and get your retiree some of the things sold there. It may sound a little impersonal to just get the retiree a commercially made gift but then this may actually prove very useful if the retiree is still a novice or beginner golfer. Maybe you might want to get him a golf club set as this is the basic requirement to be able to play golf.

Moreover, you may find some more accessories there that your retiree golfer still needs, but then perhaps you could also contribute your imagination to think about what things can be made to enhance the golfing equipment he may already have.

Shop bought golfing equipment is handy too, eg, you could make your retiree feel professional, giving him a set of famous golf clubs, making him look like a pro.

Gags and Jokes The fun part of choosing to give a gag gift instead is the humour such items can create. It also adds to the lighter side of the golf-playing retiree’s party and his friends will be able to join in with smiles, laughs and jokey comments too.

The gag gift should be chosen very carefully as the joke gift may represent a sensitive matter for the retiree, especially if he is still a newbie player. Gag present in relation to golfing might be taken negatively and discourage or at least hinder their learning and progress as they are disturbed by the idea emphasized by the gag present given to them.

However, for veteran players who already know the game well, the gift of a good joke gift on their retirement day would be very amusing because they would see golfing not only as a way to reduce stress but to actually just have some fun as well.

It’s a good idea to view retirement gifts for golfers as merely a easy way to make your golfing friend see the funny side of life after his working life is over.

Getting the Most from Golfing Lessons

Rhys Jones | December 10, 2009

It is never easy asking for help, but in golf, it is practically a must-do. More’s the pity, we often ask our friends and partners, whereas in fact, we should be taking a lesson or two with a professional, usually called the Club Pro.

We may think that a Pro would criticize too harshly, but they are honest, positive and usually very helpful.

Golf lessons at the local golf course aren’t as expensive as you probably think and they are worth it too, since your game will get better more quickly thus causing you less frustration, making playing golf much more fun for you.

It is of vital importance to be absolutely honest about your game. The Pro will ask you what you think you need to start with: driving, chipping, putting or whatever you feel you need assistance with.

Listen carefully and follow the Pro’s instructions. You may have doubts if the Pro changes your stance, your grip or your swing, but really, the Pro does know best.

Oh and don’t hesitate to ask the Pro golfer any questions you may have and don’t worry about whether your question or concern may sound silly – they’ve heard it all before and will not make you feel like an idiot for inquiring. If you don’t get it, tell the Pro that you do not get it. You should never leave a lesson with unanswered questions.

For example, a strategy might be to concentrate on one thing during a lesson, or on several. You might start with a lesson on driving; get the right grip, the right stance, the right swing, the right follow-through in one lesson, and then practice it for a few weeks until you feel that you’ve got it right. Next time, you might want to work on your short game, or putting.

You’ve bought your set of golf clubs and it isn’t cheap, is it? So, it doesn’t make sense not to learn how to use it to it’s best advantage thereby improving your game and abilities, does it?

Choose Golf Shoes Wisely

Rhys Jones | November 30, 2009

Your swing may change with time, your accuracy and distance will improve with practice and strength, and you will become deadly accurate with a putter in time, but you will always do these things while standing on your own two feet and they can get tired.

So, your feet need to be quite comfortable, don’t they! Have you ever developed a blister whilst walking or running? It’s all you can think about and it ruins your enjoyment of the experience of what you are doing. Don’t let uncomfortable golf shoes ruin your game of golf too.

This is one sphere where you shouldn’t let your natural frugality make the decision for you. You will be putting on these shoes many times over a long period of time and they should be considered a good investment in your game of golf.

Comfort, not cost, should be your biggest concern when you are buying shoes. Your foot should not move at all at the heel when you walk, yet your toes shouldn’t feel constrained. Have your shoes fitted professionally and walk around in them before you actually buy them.

Proper golf shoes should be waterproof so that your feet remain dry in damp conditions. Good socks are important too; they will take perspiration away from you feet, keeping your feet dry and comfortable.

All golf courses prohibit metal spikes on golf shoes in an effort to protect their delicate greens. Purchase shoes that allow you to change the rubber spikes easily, and while you’re doing that, purchase some extra spikes. You never know when you may lose one. You should also replace the spikes when they become worn.

You have many things to worry about whilst playing your round of golf, but your feet shouldn’t be one of them. When it comes to golf shoes, quality counts, honestly.

If you are thinking about buying new golf shoes, or if you are just into your game of golf, please go along to our website entitled Golfing Tips for Beginners Get a totally unique version of this article from our article submission service

Essentials of Golfing Etiquette

Rhys Jones | November 15, 2009

Golf is a game of rules and etiquette, and it is very important to know the essentials of golfing etiquette before you go up to the tee to play your first game of golf.

Whether you are playing on your own, in a twosome or a foursome, the first rule of golfing etiquette is that you must always wait your turn. You must stay aware of the group on the next hole and wait until they are well ahead of you before hitting your ball.

Golfing etiquette also means that it is never cool to “hurry” the group in front of you. If you are playing with others, wait for your turn to hit the ball; never hit at the same time as another player.

While you are waiting for your turn to play, go to your ball and determine which golf club you will need to use and how you are going to hit the golf ball with it. This is called “ready golf” and keeps the game moving along, but don’t hurry anybody, just be ready for your turn to play.

Another useful piece of golfing etiquette, especially for the novice is ‘playing through’. For example, if your team is holding up the players behind you, say because you are playing consistently over par, let them play through. You would simply wave them through, or if they are near enough to you, just ask them if they would like to play through. You will never make an enemy by doing this!

When someone is taking a shot, you should be standing behind them and you shouldn’t make a sound! It is very distracting to be about to to tee off and just as you draw back, someone decides to play with coins in their pocket or noisily unwrap a piece of candy.

Replacing divots. Let’s say you are on the fairway and you strike the ball a bit thick and a clod of earth and grass goes flying, golfing etiquette says that you ought to repair the hole. On some courses you just put the turf back and step on it to keep it down, but on most courses, there is a sand/seed mixture on the course to put into the divot. Also, if your ball makes a deep impression when it lands on the green, you should use your divot tool to repair it.

As soon as you have finished a hole, replace the flag and leave the green as quickly as possible so that the next players can play that hole. Add up your score and write it on the scorecard when you get back to your trolley.

For sure, there is much more to golfing etiquette than this, but these basic rules of golfing etiquette will enable you to get around the course without upsetting anyone. If we all uphold golfing etiquette we will keep the game nice and friendly, or not?
