Speakers For Home Theater

Owen Jones | March 31, 2010

When most people are looking for a sound system, they usually go directly to the speakers. This is not of necessity wrong, but you must not end there. The speakers are an important element of a sound system, but they are not the be all and end all.

It also important to think about the player and the amplifier, because any sound system is only as good as its weakest constituent. Another important topic is the placement of those speakers. It is just as important to locate your speakers correctly as it is not to buy cheap speakers. There are also misconceptions about size. Bigger is not always better.

In the past, it was often the rule that bigger meant better, but now often the reverse is often the case. Technological advancement has been concentrated on producing smaller speakers, that will take up less space in our smaller houses and smaller cars. Therefore, the smaller speakers are often the most technologically advanced.

If you are going for surround sound, which is the best available today, then you will also have to think carefully about placement. That is the positioning of the speakers. In a typical 5.1 surround sound home theater, you will have six speakers: five ordinary speakers and one sub-woofer.

These speakers would be set out one to the far right of the screen and one to the far left of it and one underneath it. The other two speakers would be at the rear of the audience, but not so far apart as the front speakers. The sub-woofer can go in the centre at the front or the back.

For smaller rooms, a 3.1 surround sound system might be sufficient, that is you leave out the rear speakers. For a larger room, you may want either a 6.1 or 7.1 system. The 6.1 has the rear row of speakers corresponding to the front row, while the 7.1 has an additional middle rear speaker.

It is better if you can buy all your speakers at the same time from the same manufacturer. Obviously, they all have to match each other and the amplifier. The output from the amplifier has to match the capabilities of the speakers or you risk blowing them. That is, sending them more power than they can cope with, which causes too much vibration and permanent damage to the speaker’s internal components. Everyone has heard blown speakers, they sound dreadful.

If you can not afford to obtain all your speakers at the same time, buy a famous brand and a late-ish model, so that you can get more of them when you can afford to. Do not go for end of line speakers, because they are discounted, unless you can buy all the speakers that you will ever need for your system.

Buy your speakers online, if that gets you the best deal, but you really ought to hear speakers like the ones you are buying in action, before you make up your mind. You could also take your Internet price to the local dealers and ask them to match it. They might, you never know and it will save you postage too.

What Is A Good Ergonomic Chair?

Owen Jones |

It is more important to use an ergonomic chair whenever you can these days than ever before. This is because our bodies were not designed to sit for hours at a time in front of a desk or TV, and yet more and more people are finding themselves doing it.

Sitting continuously for hours puts strain on the muscles in the back and can ultimately cause the body to suffer work-related injuries. The use of an ergonomic chair minimizes the strain that the body experiences when sitting for extended periods.

However, not all chairs are what they say they are and this is particularly true of ergonomic chairs. Some manufacturers call their products ergonomic chairs just to capture a share in a premium market, where people are suffering from pain caused by strain on the lower back, the neck, the arms, the legs and on the shoulders. A real ergonomic chair is designed to minimize this pain.

So, how can you tell if an ergonomic chair is really an ergonomic chair? A true ergonomic chair has the following elements:

Seat height: An ergonomic chair should be fitted with a mechanism that allows you to adjust its height while you are sitting on it. If your knees are level and your feet are flat on the floor, while you are sitting on the ergonomic chair, it means that its height is correct for you. Also, you should be able to reach the adjusting mechanism of the seat and operate it even if you are sitting down.

Foot rest: Ergonomic chairs do not require a foot rest. If the height of the chair can be adjusted easily and allow you to put your feet flat on the ground while you are seated, then a foot rest is not essential. However, if your table is too high in relation to your chair and if having your feet flat on the floor means you have to strain your arms, then a foot rest is needed so you can rest your feet comfortably without causing strain to your legs.

Seat pan: The seat pan of your ergonomic chair should be wide enough to fit your hips and thighs without pinching you in any way. It should also be contoured so your weight can be distributed evenly on it. In addition, the seat pan should be long enough to fit your legs. If it is too long, it will hit the back of your knees and stop you from leaning back comfortably.

Seat cushioning: The cushioning of an ergonomic chair should be sufficient for it not to become deformed after you have been using it for a while. If the cushioning is not thick enough, the seat of the chair can get deformed permanently and it will become uncomfortable for you to sit on after a while. Later on, it will just lead you to experience pain on your back and thighs.

In addition, you should choose seat covers that breathe freely and are easy to clean. Such seat covers will not feel hot and uncomfortable against your thighs after sitting on the chair for a long time. Airy seat covers also mean that they will not be a breeding ground for dust mites.

Back support: The back rest of a good ergonomic chair should be adjustable to fit the curve of your lower back so that it can provide you with lumbar support. This is very important, especially if you will not be the sole user of the chair. Moreover, the back rest should be wide and tall enough to support your mid-back and your upper back as well.

Armrests: The armrests of a good ergonomic chair should be contoured to fit the arms, broad enough to provide sufficient support, and can be adjusted upward and downward as well as inward or outward. The armrests of the ergonomic chair should let the arms and elbows rest naturally, without making you lean forward or lift your shoulders.

Pedestal base: If mobility in your chair is vital to your work, then you should get an ergonomic chair that has a five pedestal base with casters that can let you slide easily over the floor. A five pedestal base will also give enough balance so that the chair will not tip over when you lean back.

Always look for these features when buying an ergonomic chair for your home or your office. They will prevent your body from receiving injuries brought about by incessant strain to the muscles.

The Ancient History of Barry, South Wales: Part One

Owen Jones |

The majority of what we have come to know about Barry and the Vale of Glamorgan in which it is to be found, has been gathered from the observation of old properties in the area. However, many of these are in a very bad state and have been for a very long time. There are also legendary tales like the one about Joseph of Arimathea, who traded tin across the channel in Glastonbury and was one of the first missionaries to the country.

It is a widely-held traditional belief that the father of Caractacus took him to Rome where they both converted to Christianity. They later returned to the Vale of Glamorgan with the missionary Bran The Blessed. It is also well-known that Christianity had gained much popular belief in the Vale by the early fourth century and that several bishops on the Council of Rome were from the area.

Saint Baruch’s Church on Barry Island is one of the oldest places of historic religious interest in the region, but unfortunately, it too has been allowed to become dilapidated. Barry Island was one of the most important places of monastic interest in south Wales and around. The ancient Viking strongholds of Steep and Flat Holms also housed monks and Saint Illtyd’s Seminary in nearby Llantwit Major, which taught 2,200 disciples, was closely linked to it too.

A castle was constructed on the site of an old Roman fort and naval shipyard, which had been on Porthkerry Point, although it protruded further out to sea then than it does now. Furthermore, many wolf and deer bones have been found between Barry and Sully, proving these animals’ existence there in vast numbers Arrowheads, flints, needles and coins show that people inhabited the area with them.

Barry Island was first called ‘Baruch’s Island’, as far as we know, after Saint Baruch. St. Baruch had been found on one of the beeches, washed up dead in 700 AD. He is known to have drowned when returning from Flat Holm, which was commonly used as a retreat by religious people over Lent.

He and Gwelches had been disciples of St. Cadoc at the time. On their return to the island, they realized that they had left their enchiridion (religious manual) behind and St. Cadoc made them go back and get it. They never returned alive. St. Baruchs most famous disciple, St. Illtyd was educated there.

Barry Island has had several names, including Island of the Saints and Insular of Peiros. St. Peiro was the leader of the seminary after St. Illtyd and the mentor of St. Samson. St. Doeninas was also a leader of another abbey near Friars Point on the island.

Home Cinema Luxury Seating

Owen Jones |

Many people like to relax after a hard day at work by going to the movie theater. However, if you go straight from work, you are likely to get trapped in a traffic jam and you will not have had the chance to freshen up. On the other hand, if you go home first to have a shower and get changed, sometimes you can not be bothered to go out again. That is how it works with me in any case.

So, would it not be nice to be able to reproduce that authentic movie going experience in your own home? Not only can getting to the cinema be a hassle, you can be hassled once you are there too. People talking through the film or giggling right behind you, someone with his feet up on the back of the chair next to you, cell phones ringing, babies crying… It is enough to put you off. And it is not even as if it is a cheap experience anymore.

If you fall into this category, home theater was made for you. It is not necessary to have a spare room in which to set up your home theater, you could just as easily use the living room. The size of the screen is important, but that is a function of the size of your room or, more accurately put, a function of how far away from the screen you will sit.

If you need a very large screen, you could go for a projector, although for most people a 36 – 60 inch screen should be adequate. Then speakers. You must have surround sound or you will miss out on a lot of the authenticity of a true movie theater experience. Again, the number of speakers depends on the size of the room. A 5.1 configuration will do for most rooms. That means quadraphonic sound, plus one extra speaker under the screen and a sub-woofer.

If you like to play games, then you could replace the standard DVD player with an Xbox for a truly awesome experience. Those are the basics of a medium to excellent home theater with possible games capability, but there are other things you can do as well.

A set of heavy drapes is a good idea. They will not only stop light coming in, but the will muffle sound getting out Seating is a requirement and I would add a few occasional tables too for drinks and snacks. If the room is not near the kitchen, a small fridge would be useful as well.

The seating provisions are important too. Some people just put a few couches in the room and that works well enough. Others prefer a few armchairs. If it is to be used mainly by children, half a dozen bean bags is all they require to have fun. However, if you or you and your spouse want to make the experience really something else, why not get a couple of recliners or even better still electric massage chairs? You could be sitting there watching a film with a drink and some snacks on a near-by table while having all your problems and stress from work being soothingly massaged away.

How Do Dogs Get Their Point Across?

Owen Jones | March 30, 2010

Dogs are just about the most intelligent of domestic pets. If you take the time to look, you will see that they have the ability to communicate with humans, other dogs and even other animals. They do this with body language and voice. Their signs are made with the their eyes, ears, eyebrows, head, mouth and tail.

Their voice is obviously not the same as ours, but they use pitch in their barks, whines, whimpers, pants, growls and howls and their gestures are made with their entire body and every element of it.

You can always differentiate a confident and therefore higher ranking dog, because they hold their tails high. Dogs, like all other animals, including we humans, have an innate sense or their position in society. This is because dogs evolved in packs in the wild, just as we evolved in communities. which is why they integrate well into our human society.

There is a pecking order within their group, as within human society. The subservient dogs submit themselves to the stronger dogs, which is why dogs lower their tail when they feel unsure of themselves. When dogs fight for dominance, the fur on their tails stands up and they have this trait in common with other animals. They do it to show that they are being serious in front of their adversary.

A dog that is uncertain what to do will wag its tail slowly. Rather like you or I might give a weak smile, unsure whether to smile openly or frown. They are in a process of figuring out whether they should recognize the status quo or fight. Excited dogs wag their tails very fast and if the dog’s hip wiggles along with the tail, it means that the dog is in subservient mode to a higher ranker. A pet should do that to its owner, as you have become the leader of its substitute pack.

When dogs become aggressive they show their teeth, the same as humans. If all of the teeth are visible, it indicates that the dog is prepared to bite or attack. We do the same unconsciously. People often bare their teeth and snarl insults, before a fight. However, they also show teeth when they smile but this is an indication of compliance, again as we do – submissiveness here meaning a recognition that a fight is superfluous.

With a dog, the number of teeth on display differentiates between a smile and a snarl. In a smile, a dog only shows the front teeth, but in a snarl the dog reveals all his teeth and gums and makes an aggressive noise.

Ears are a good sign of the dog’s level of attention. When the ears are vertical and forward facing, it means that the dog is alert. But if the dog is stress-free, its ears will lie flat. However, some breeds do not have as much control over their ears.

Dogs bark to protect their territory, which comes to mean their boss’ territory, which should signify your property. However, barking is their normal speech so you will have to learn the difference between friendly play barking and aggression in your dog. It is pretty apparent though.

Study of your pet is the key, because, although all dogs are the same as in all humans are the same, there are small differences. They are not hard to learn, just spend some time with you dog and keep your mind open and it will become very apparent to you.

Deer Hunting In In The Western Hemisphere

Harry Parmer |

In the United States, there are very few activities that are nearly as popular as deer hunting. People hunt all kinds of deer. With around thirty subspecies of whitetail in North and Central America you will find a lot of deer to hunt! You will find also eight species in South America keeping the southern hemisphere hunters busy also.

Whitetail deer can adapt to a wide diversity of habitat and size variations occur in the animal according to wherever they live. The slighter deer roam free in the warmer locations, and larger deer grow up within the deeper extra remote backwoods habitats.

The female deer, referred to as a doe, averages round 90-200 pounds. The males, referred to as a buck, weighs from 130 to 300 pounds. If you are interested in the record largest buck, a five hundred pound deer was recorded in Minnesota. In tropical locations, whitetails are usually very miniature.

Throughout rut, most bucks may burn off alot of their weight by not eating. They’ll expend tremendous amounts of energy seeking female does. During rutting, they also are less active when the high temperature is higher than 40 degrees Fahrenheit. In these conditions, dehydration and overheating can happen to the animal.

Hunters hunt for sport and for food (in the form of deer meat) around the world. You will discover approximately 30 million deer roaming both rural and urban locations all around the United States. Deer were nearly eradicated by over-hunting by 1930, but made a tremendous population comeback after years of successful herd management and improved state & federal hunting regulations.

Auto accidents can be a problem with deer. Late at night, during rutting season is when vehicles strike most deer. Commonly in rut, the deer are on the roam increasingly more. This roaming period can result in serious auto accidents, and in some cases, death to the car passengers. More times than not, the deer do not survive. The ideal action to take is to basically be familiar with the timing of deer mating season as well as drive a little slower & alertly. Remember that deer move quickly and could be in front of your car just before you notice it.

The largest percentage of deer in the outdoors survive from around 11-12 years and have been known to live a bit longer in captivity. Deer are up against predators like wolfs, disease, hunters, fire, and habitat loss. Plus hunting equipment has been improved over the years. With the improvements, it is definitely a little less difficult than ever before for hunters to hunt deer effectively.

So get ready, right now is the time get started on making plans for hitting the hunting areas for an excellent experience chasing deer! If you’re looking for food, hobby, or just love to take photos, just remember to please be careful out there. Make sure to wear the right hunting gear like safety orange once in the woods. It will let hunters know you are human, and never move too quickly. Good luck to all you hunters in your hunting adventure!

Vacation Property

Owen Jones |

If you are thinking of buying a vacation rental property, there are two things that you can ultimately do with it. Some owners of vacation rental property intend to live in it most of the year round themselves and others intend to rent it out for most of the year. There is no doubt that vacation rental property can present an excellent income stream.

However, there is a vast difference between vacation property rental and residential property rental. This has to do with the fact that holiday makers are not necessarily looking for the same amenities in a vacation rental property as they are in a home.

One thing that does affect the desirability of both vacation rental property and residential property is location. However, a good residential property for a young family may need to be close to schools and other amenities and for older people being near a school is more like a hassle.

Similarly with vacation rental property, you have to know your target market. You have to discover the answer to the question: why do people come to this location? And then buy a vacation rental property that matches the highest volume profile.

In this way, you will never be short of tenants and you will be sure of high rents too. For example, some people might go to the Caribbean island of St. Croix in the Virgin Islands for the diving opportunities it presents while others may want to explore the tropical rain forests. However, younger travelers might not want to go far from the only largish town on the island, Christiansted, so that they can take part in any nightlife happening.

One thing that everyone requires is security. The person who hires your vacation rental property will want to feel secure. That is secure from falling masonry and rickety stairs and safe from burglars. That means that your property should be well lit both internally and externally and have well-made doors and locks. Windows should be lockable too.

It is a good idea to provide a kitchen like the one a family would normally expect at home. So, an American kitchen with American style appliances for American families, if they are the people you are trying to attract. Again, you will have to research the typical visitors to where you want to buy a vacation rental property. A younger family may eat in at night, an older one may never eat in at all. The kitchen should be well-equipped, furniture should be comfortable and recreational equipment should be provided too.

A lot of people like to take their dogs with them, so you might want to consider making the vacation rental property pleasant for pet owners. If the furniture is robust, massive oak or something like that, dogs will not be able to damage it easily. Plastered walls without wall covering and tiled floors are also conducive to keeping animals in the house. This is a definitely growing niche market for vacation rental properties

And last but not least, remember that people like to be able to keep in touch when they are away from their loved ones, so Internet access is a growing essential too. People can VOIP, so a phone is not so imperative these days. If you bear these points in mind, you can have a profitable vacation rental property where you can holiday free too.

Events From January Ten Years Ago

Owen Jones |

I was looking through a history book and it was going on about memorable events of ten years ago, but I had forgotten most of them. I have picked out some of the events of exactly ten years ago this month – January, in a word. So here are a few things that you may or probably will not remember from January 2000.

Deutsch, mishandled secret information.

Fishing 101

Colin Jones | March 29, 2010

So, you have decided that you want to learn how to fish. There are several ways of learning, the hardest being trial and error. The best way is to find an instructor for one-to-one lessons.

1. Get some seasickness tablets: If you’re going to be fishing from on the water, nothing is worse than having your fishing ruined by a bout of seasickness. Most seasickness medicine is appropriate (e.g. Bonine). Even seasoned fishermen take some on rough-weather days. Take one tablet before you go to sleep, another when you wake up and a third before you go on board.

2. Buy a reference book: There are a lot of good books available at your local bookshops and online. The book should give you instructions as well as terms and definitions. There are some things you may not immediately understand but that you have to know anyway. For example, learn how to tie different kinds of knots. This knowledge will also be invaluable for other reasons throughout your life.

3. Go on a party boat: There are party boats that take from five to as many as sixty anglers. The boat will usually provide you with everything you need such as bait, lures, rod, reel, weights and hooks. They will help you fish and even take the fish off the hook for you as well. You will make plenty of new fishing friends and they will assist and advise you. Party boats will generally cost between $25 – $70 a day per person and the fish you catch are yours to eat. A party boat is a bargain for beginners.

4. Select a pier: Assuming you have already acquired the skills to use a rod and reel, you need to look for a fishing pier. Most coastal cities have a public pier or pay-to-fish pier. You can hire tackle and buy bait on these piers and, if you do have trouble, there will be plenty of pier anglers willing to help and give you tips.

5. Party or pier?: You may want to try either step three or four times or both at the same time at this point. The best thing to do is to practise both ways several times to really learn them.

6. The reel affair: The traditional reel is probably what you’ve been using up to this point. The conventional reel is designed for loads of wear and tear. However, perhaps you now want to consider buying another type or / and make of reel. Hopefully, you have already met other fishermen and perhaps made a friend or two who can assist you in selecting a reel. You could also ask a fishing equipment shop owner for tips.

Firstly, you need to learn the mechanism of the reel and the other equipment. Learning to cast, tie knots and bait is not really all that difficult. Secondly, you must learn where to fish. Successful fishermen know where the fish are swimming. Fish move from place to place and knowledgeable fishermen know these patterns and are able to work out where the fish are likely to be swimming.
